Su Pollard lights up Lincoln’s stage

Interview: We speak with Su Pollard ahead of her last reprise in Lincoln as Miss Hannigan in the hit musical Annie.

Su Pollard of Hi-de-Hi! fame returns to Lincoln this September to reprise her role as Miss Hannigan in the hit musical Annie.

The show kicks off a four-month tour on September 1 at Lincoln’s Theatre Royal where Pollard will be treading the boards as the devious Miss Hannigan for the final time, having played the character for the best part of a decade.

Pollard is no stranger to Lincoln, having performed here on numerous occasions.

“I’ve been here loads. I’ve been coming to Lincoln probably since about 1974. For me it’s changed so much for the better. They’ve made it really pretty.

“Of course there’s a fantastic university and I love the shops. I’ve always loved the Bailgate. They seem to have spent a lot of money around Lincoln. The people are always great. They say ‘eh up duck’.”

The interview takes on a life of its own as the self-confessed ‘enthusiastic talker’ answers most questions before they have the chance to take form. Her engaging personality shines through and the half hour flashes by.

“I’m really enjoying coming back, because I’ve got happy memories of the place. The nightlife here is tremendous. The audiences are very good. My main concern is that people get value for money, have a good night out and go home happy.”

The wonderfully eccentric veteran of both sitcom and stage describes theatre as her ‘absolute favourite’, and her passion for the show is clear as she discusses the final tour.

“It’s the last one probably ever of this production, so not to be missed. It’s going to be absolutely fabulous. We’re pulling out all the stops.”

Reflecting on her time in the role, Pollard acknowledges her good fortune.

“I’m never to be seen again as Miss Hannigan. She’s been very good to me. I’ve loved it. Parts like that don’t come around very often. It’s just a wonderful thing to have been involved with.”

Annie will be showing at Lincoln Theatre Royal between September 1 and 3.
