Traffic chaos and 7-mile diversion as Greetwell Road works begin

Drivers in Lincoln face almost five weeks of delays on Greetwell Road after roadworks began this week to allow for construction of the Eastern Bypass — and the first day caused chaos across the city.

As previously reported, a section of Greetwell Road, past the mini roundabout near Wickes, is closed off so drivers will face nearly seven miles of diversions.

No vehicles will be allowed through while roadworks are in place until April 5.

Drivers will be diverted through Outer Circle Road, Bunkers Hill, Hawthorn Road, Croft Lane, Church Lane, Fiskerton Road and back onto Greetwell Road.

Signs on site state that Fenland Nursery and Hideaway Tea Rooms, along with other local businesses, are open as usual.

The 7.5km Lincoln Eastern Bypass will link the A158 Wragby Road roundabout to the A15 at Bracebridge Heath.

As previously reported, the Lincoln Eastern Bypass project has faced some delays after Carillion and a subcontractor – Hawk Plant Ltd – collapsed into administration.

Seven companies showed interest in taking over the earthworks contract on the project after the collapse of Hawk Plant Ltd.

Galliford Try, the main contractor for the highways scheme, previously put out the work to tender but no contractor has yet been chosen.
